ATT To Look Beyond HSPA and WiMAX 4G

AT&T Looks Beyond HSPA

source: Wireless Week

AT&T Vice President Chris Hill today revealed the carrier is looking to build out an LTE network for next generation voice and high speed data.

Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the GSM Association's next specification beyond HSPA. It offers fast data speeds like mobile WiMax (which is predominatly to be used on CDMA carriers like Sprint-Nextel) and is expected to be easier to deploy in large networks.

The carrier has not announced when they will begin building out the new network, but it is part of a $20 billion project expected to take up to 10 years to complete. AT&T has previously committed to upgrading its current HSDPA network to HSUPA in the near future.

Sprint-Nextel, the largest 2.5Ghz spectrum holder in the United States, has stated that they are pushing WiMAX live this summer in select cities, and hopefully launch nationally in the same areas as their EV-DO Rev 0/Rev A footprint by late 2008.

Additionally, Sprint-Nextel is looking into partnerships with other 2.5Ghz spectrum holders to offset the cost and create a co-branding market share. With ClearWire running WiMAX for internet and phone already, its a possibility Sprint-Nextel might partner.

T-Mobile USA, a division of Deutsche Telekom AG, recently aquired at auction a significant portion of both 1700Mhz and 2100Mhz. With this aquisition, making T-Mobile the largest spectrum holder total, with capability to lay a new network for over 485Million people. Larger then the population of the USA. Could T-Mobile partner with Sprint-Nextel or ClearWire to help fund the build out of similarly spaced towers for similarly spaced spectrum?

AT&T Launches Video Share Service (Video-Calling)

AT&T Launches Its Video Share Service

source: AT&T

AT&T officially announced its video sharing service today at NXTcomm in Chicago. The service lets people send a live video feed from one cell phone to another during a voice call. The service requires that both participants have Video Share-capable phones and is available in 3 markets immediately (Atlanta, Dallas and San Antonio), with other areas served by AT&T's 3G network becoming available later in July. When the Video Share session is started, either caller can choose to send the feed, but it is a one-way stream. The service will be available for 35 cents per minute, or bundled into two packages: $4.99 per month for 25 minutes of use, or $9.99 per month for 60 minutes of use.

I think Ill wait till T-Mobile or Sprint launch this later this year, and include it at a flat rate price for unlimited use, or add it to their already unlimited reasonably priced data plans.

AT&T Starts TDMA Shut Down IMMEDIATELY

AT&T Starts TDMA Shutdown

source: AT&T

AT&T has begun to shut off TDMA networks in select cities, notifying TDMA and GAIT users in those markets that they must upgrade their handsets to GSM models. Trial shutdowns have begun with small areas where TDMA and Analog networks are separated. If successful, AT&T plans to shut down larger zones, including whole states, this summer. Areas where analog and TDMA service share a network will not be shut down until after the analog sunset in February 2008, confirming previous statements from the AT&T. The company added that now 99% of all voice minutes are carried on its GSM network, up from 95% in March.
